Reiki pronounced (Ray-Key)is a Japanese form of stress reduction and rejuvenation that promotes balance on every level: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and even our interaction with the people and places in our daily lives. While this may sound foreign at first, especially given our culture's emphasis on finding a pill for almost every imaginable symptom, most people who try Reiki appreciate its effective simplicity.
I like to refer to Reiki as an energy massage because it is administered via a series of hand positions on or above the clothed body. However, Reiki differs from a body massage in that its intention is focused entirely on the energetic level of our Being. Reiki is also classified as a form of energy medicine. It is non-invasive and holistic, a perfect complement to medication use, surgery, acupuncture, chemotherapy and even psychotherapy.
What is a Reiki Session Like?
The Reiki practitioner gently places his/her hands on or near the body in a series of hand positions. These include positions around the head and shoulders, stomach, knees, feet and back. Each position is held for a few minutes, based on the client’s needs. Reiki/Universal Life Force energy is then directed to bring balance to the body’s energy centers.
Most people receiving a Reiki treatment express feelings of deep relaxation. Some express joy. Some feel a reduction of aches and pains. As the Reiki energy begins to flow, one releases tension, anxiety, anger, grief, fear and other negative feelings. A state of peace and well-being is experienced, and, at the end of a session, most people feel refreshed and have a more positive, balanced outlook than they did before the treatment.
Reiki sessions are conducted in a peaceful setting with the client fully clothed on a Reiki table. A typical session is 60 minutes. No need to undress, just take your shoes off. The full Reiki treatment takes 1 hour. This addresses the complete body. Shorter sessions can be scheduled to target specific problems or areas of the body that need work or to fit the client's time limits and budget.
